Havasu Falls located in Supai, AZ is one of the most beautiful places I have ever experienced. It was also one of the most difficult hikes I have ever attempted with all of my camera gear. I first heard about this place in 2010 through a Facebook post showing pictures of people hiking here and wading through the turquoise waters. I instantly added it to my bucket list of travel destinations. Booking reservations from the Havasupai tribe was one of the most difficult processes I have ever gone through. The reservations become available on February 1st of every year. Unfortunately, the only way to reserve a spot at that time was via telephone and they only had one line to call through. The phone line would constantly stay on busy tone due to the thousands of other interested hikers. I even tried to call at random times after that date and still got the busy tone For the next 6 years on this date, I would stay up all night just to wait for the phone lines to open and never got through.. Fast forward to 2017, a whopping 7 years later.. the location had become so popular they implemented an online reservation process. This still only became available on February 1st at 8am CST. I set my alarm and had the website open on my laptop, iPad and phone anxiously awaiting for my opportunity. Because I was planning this trip for myself and a couple of friends; coordinating available dates was taking time and the entire year completely booked up within 5 minutes of the launch. I couldn’t believe it… Irritated and discouraged I decided if I’m going to do this, then Im going to have to do this solo. I had to wait another year to try again.. Finally, February 2018 arrived. Same laptop, iPad and phone set up as the year before, but this time with no sleep; because I didn’t want to chance sleeping through my alarm. I had my dates picked out and my time had finally come.. I stumbled across a single day that was available for June 4th. I was so desperate to get a reservation that I wasn’t thinking rationally. Moments after paying I realized what time constraints would be a factor with travel and the hiking experience. I began to panic knowing I needed at least two days to really accomplish my photography goals. As I sat back down at my computer hoping by some miracle I might be able to book another day…I noticed something… every time I would tap refresh on the booking calendar, a random date would appear available for booking. I sat there 4hours straight just tapping refresh in hopes to book another date just before or after the date I had already reserved. My efforts were rewarded and finally a date the day after my current reservation became available. I was finally going to Supai!! The rewards didn’t stop there. Once I arrived to the village check in center; I explained to the tribe member that while I had to book two separate reservations and pay the same fees twice; (which my total equaled the same as if I would have booked the 4days/3nights). I politely asked if there was anyway as a solo hammock camper I could possibly stay the additional time that I had technically paid for. I knew it was a long shot; but to my surprise with a generous smile, he said “sure, we can do that for you. Enjoy your time!” I was taught at a young age… You’ll never know unless you ask. The first day of hiking I trekked a total of 17.6 miles. It was around 10 miles to reach the check-in station on the reservation, and then another 3 miles to reach the campgrounds. Once I established a good spot to set up camp along Havasu Creek, I needed to replenish my water supply at the fresh water source. The natives I met during my time there were very kind and the waterfalls and landscapes exceeded all of my expectations. Hope I get the chance to return again someday. If not. I’ll always have these photographs to look back on. Mission Accomplished✌️
