In the shadow of the Second Schleswig War of 1864, young dragoon officer Christian Hansen fights bravely for Denmark, only to return home wounded and changed. With faith as his compass, he builds a new life near Esbjerg with his devoted wife Sophia, raising a family through years of toil, joy, and hardship.
Their only son, Søren, grows up as the youngest of five children, overshadowed by four older sisters-two of whom sail across the Atlantic to make new lives in Brooklyn. At sixteen, restless and drawn by faith and family, Søren makes the bold decision to leave Denmark behind and follow them to America.
