The first principle of the political theory of the Middle Ages is that the function of political authority is to maintain justice, 18l - this is the real meaning of the conception that the authority of the king is divine, 182 - the second principle is the supremacy of law as the embodiment of justice, 183 - the third is that the relation between ruler and people is founded upon the mutual obligation and agreement to maintain justice and law, 185.
