Vampires have isolated themselves in their cities ever since the Species War, but they still rule from the shadows. In this world, Kairos, a young man with a new undergraduate degree in Human Culture and no experience with vampires, finds himself at a loss for work. When a friend suggests looking for work with a vampire, he quickly finds a mysterious job listing that promises to fill all of his requirements. He earns an interview and as he meets his prospective employer, he falls hopelessly in love with the ancient vampire who rules his house.
