The aureus, or gold coin, was double the weight of the denarius, and under the first emperors was worth about $5 it also decreased in value. In the time of the sons of Constantine it was worth about $3, and continued at that for eight or nine centuries. The gold solidus of the Byzantine Empire was the currency of all Europe in the Middle Ages, and is often met with in histories of those times.
