When Roy Nilsen retired from his career as a pastor, the couple wondered if they should find a smaller home, but they couldn't bear the thought of giving up their large diningroom set or the kitchen table that could encourage intimate conversations or grow to seat seven easily. So they stayed, and for twenty years family has gathered around those two tables during times of grief and times of joy, during times of silly laughter and times of intense discussion of politics or theology. For years a high-chair was pulled up to a table for the youngest of their eleven grandchildren.
No one can remember exactly where the idea came from or how it evolved. But, as with most things in this family, good ideas seem to hatch full grown with an inevitability about them. Of course we should get together and share recipes. Of course such a book should contain thoughts about meaning and belonging, about purpose and fulfillment. Of course "Granmary" should design it and publish it. That's what she does. Of course the span of ideas about nutrition and food sources, about diets and dieting, about food presentation and food composting might or will be obvious in the creation of dinners by various family members. And of course the old folks, Grandpa Roy and Granmary, will try to keep a focus here and there on matters of the Spirit and of the soul, because that's who they are. All in all, the book is like the family: ideas and beauty mix, as essential ingredients, along with protein and spices.
