Bill Carlsen
was a competent saxophonist who led
Devine's Wisconsin Roof Orchestra
in Milwaukee during 1926-1931 and a later orchestra at
the Modernistic Ballroom
until 1936. The best jazz recordings of
Carlsen
's bands from 1926-1931 are on this CD. All of the music was formerly quite rare. None of the sidemen were destined for fame, and the soloists are generally just OK, but the ensembles are appealing, and the music frequently swings well for the period. Among the 23 titles are
"Shanghai Honeymoon,"
"Black Maria,"
"New St. Louis Blues,"
"Farewell Blues,"
"Milenburg Joys,"
and two versions of
"Tiger Rag."
