John Henry is middle aged, unappealing, and mediocre. His outward identity- painfully normal, essentially human- is an illusion he will be unable to maintain much longer. John Henry is not human. He is a disconsolate animal trapped by his meaningless job, by his enervating psyche, by the grotesque pageant of modern life which demands his participation. But nothing ensnares him so totally as his wife- the Sow. In John Henry's eyes the Sow is profanity in distended flesh, a succubus of impure appetite. When they first met, a young Sow saved a desperate John Henry from self annihilation; their shared emotional and social deficiencies led predictably to the altar. Their affiance was a capitulation to the sedative comforts of routine- and John Henry knew it. What he could not predict was the deterioration of his mind, the polluted anxieties to accost him whenever Sow unveiled deeper layers of her vacuous animality. The reality of Sow, and the mutuality of cowardice and hatred which cinctures them both, rendered null for John Henry the possibility of deliverance years ago. John Henry is utterly repulsed by Sow's carnality, and an upcoming rendezvous in which he will be forced to engage her physically pushes him dangerously towards total mental collapse.While returning home to her, John Henry's life is wholly transformed by an episode of deep surreality. Half nightmare, half epiphany, it convinces him that escape may be possible, that there may be an elegant solution to his "Sow problem." Its execution will test the limits of his faculties, and require John Henry to violate completely the few remaining rules of civilized behavior which remain for him.
