The true stories included in
Burnt Bread of the Heart
took place in the rural parts of the southeastern region of Turkey long ago but may continue. Recording the life stories of the women who are the main characters of these stories was heartbreaking. The primary purpose of this book is to express the conditions in which these women grew up, the difficulties they faced, and how they survived.
In Islam, bullying, violence, humiliation, discrimination, and similar negative actions are not condoned. In Turkey, men and women have the same rights under the law. Men do not have superiority over women or women over men. Both sides are equal when it comes to secularism and sharia. Today, in Turkey, when violence is committed against a woman or child, legal action is taken against everyone, including the woman's father or husband, and punishment is meted out accordingly.
Unfortunately, women were not valued in the past, whether in the region where I was born, in my country, or all over the world. They were deprived of many rights, such as education, employment, and property sharing. This situation left the woman in a challenging situation. Burnt Bread of the Heart calls for people not to repeat the horrors of the past.
