The history of the Cherokee nation in Georgia is one of triumph and tragedy. The tribe was once dominant over much of the southeastern United States. However, as settlers moved over the Appalachian Mountains for new adventures, conflict naturally arose. With each treaty, their land was diminished as peace seemed elusive. Finally, they were forcibly removed during the Trail of Tears in the 1830s.
The Civil War impacted north Georgia with several battles including Kennesaw Mountain and Allatoona Pass. Gov. Joseph Brown from Cherokee County was in office throughout that time and sought to protect the state with several home guard units. The Great Locomotive Chase in April 1862 still thrills students of history.
The first major gold rush in the U.S. occurred in the Dahlonega area beginning in the 1820s. Shortly after that, the rise of railroads connected industry and drew population. Later in the century the story of Rev. Samuel P. Jones, a great evangelist from Cartersville, is included. Moving to the 20th century, the story of gangster Pretty Boy Floyd from Adairsville is also highlighted.
Finally, the story of Reinhardt University in Waleska is one of many challenges. Beginning in the 1880s, the school battled financial woes, lack of resources during wartime, and competition for qualified professors. However, God raised up several presidents who would not give up and led donors who gave generously to fund programs and buildings.
Garland Mountain north of Waleska, Georgia is the site of Garland Mission Park, a project of First Baptist Church of Canton. It is the inspiration for this work of history.
