Bale portrayed the narcissistic investment banker Patrick Bateman, who also lived a double life as a serial killer. His obsession with his appearance, particularly with being thin, cleanliness, health and money leads him to intense amounts of anger toward his peers who he perceives as being better or having more than him. His distaste for other's success was on full display during the scene where Bateman, Paul Allen and other co-workers boasted about and displayed their business cards, with Bateman clearly being furious at Allen's impressive card that trumped his own. Bateman's compulsions led him to killing ''maybe 20 people, maybe 40,'' or so he thinks.
