Excerpt from Correspondence Between John Quincy Adams, Esquire, President of the United States, and Several Citizens of Massachusetts: Concerning the Charge of a Design to Dissolve the Union Alleged to Have Existed in That State
I have received your letter of the 26th ult. And recogniz ing among the signatures to it, names of persons for whom a long and on my part uninterrupted friendship, has survived all the bitterness of political dissension, it would have afford ed me pleasure to answer with explicitness and candor not only those persons, but each and every one of you, upon the only questions in relation to the subject matter of your letter, which as men or as citizens I can acknowledge your right to ask; namely whether the interrogator was himself one of the persons intended by me in the extract which you have given, from a statement authorised by me and published in the Na tional Intelligencer of 21st October last.
