Death is a busy man. Indistinguishable from the average elderly city goer, he has spent the past 3.6 billion years ending life on earth. But one summer afternoon, Death decides he's tired of stalking streets and facing unwavering condemnation from the mortals. And so he hangs up his black robes to join the human race. He begins a new life as a deli associate named Derek, and takes part in all the pleasures that humans take for granted: traveling by bus, climbing the job ladder, stirring civil unrest, and running for public office. He finds friendship in a middle-aged pimp and con artist, Tim, and a headstrong mid-twenties waitress named Maria. He even falls in love, which he had always heard was just one of the best things that could happen to a member of the homo sapiens. The problem is, Death still has his natural superpower- the ability to kill anyone he touches. And with friends like Satan, who pops up from Hell every once in a while, and the other three Horsemen of the Apocalypse trying to convince him to get back to his job as the Grim Reaper (after all, without Death, what fun would the Apocalypse be?) Death struggles with the decision to join the elusive human race.
