English summary: Berlin in the Wilhelminian period saw the construction of numerous synagogues, thereby giving architectural visibility in the cityscape to one of the largest Jewish communities in Europe. Their surprisingly diverse design also raises questions about the experiences and self-image of the people who built them in what was a deeply conservative and nationalistically minded society. This book traces the changing task of building a "community synagogue" in the prosperous period of the German Empire and, through meticulous reconstruction, brings into focus three prime examples of synagogue architecture, which have been lost: the synagogues at Fasanenstraae, Lutzowstraae, and Levetzowstraae.
