El exitoso psiquiatra neoyorquino Richard Gallagher era escéptico, y no obstante se sintió intrigado cuando un sacerdote católico de creencias bien arraigadas y no creyente en sandeces le pidió que examinara a una mujer para un posible exorcismo. Tras examinarla, Gallagher concluyó que no se trataba de una psicosis. Era, en su estimación científica, lo que sólo puede describirse como habilidad paranormal. La mujer estaba mentalmente alterada: estaba poseída. Este caso destacable fue el primero de muchos que Gallagher encontraría. Buscado hasta hoy en día por líderes de todas las religiones –ministros, sacerdotes, rabinos e imanes–, Gallagher ha pasado un cuarto de siglo estudiando la actividad demoníaca y los exorcismos a lo largo de la historia y ha presenciado más casos que ningún otro psiquiatra del mundo.

Upon examination, Gallagher concluded that it was not of a psychosis. It was, in his scientific estimation, what can only be described as paranormal ability. The woman was mentally disturbed: she was possessed. This remarkable case was the first of many that Gallagher would find. Sought to this day by leaders of all religions - ministers, priests, rabbis and imams - Gallagher has spent a quarter of a century studying demonic activity and exorcisms throughout history, and has witnessed more cases than any other psychiatrist in the world.
