Martha Jenkins is a widow who has lived in the same council flat at Bermondsey, South East London, for decades. It has really gone downhill in the past few years, and groups of aggressive youths hang around the estate and terrorise anyone who passes them. The problem is that Martha's teenage granddaughter Angel, is friendly with them. One night when they take things too far and murder an elderly neighbour, everybody is outraged, but too scared to speak out. Martha bumps into Billy Robertson an old friend of the family, who has just relocated from Spain, and she tells him how bad things have got in the area. Billy lets her know, that now his firm are back in the manor there will be a lot of changes. She likes Billy but she isn't keen on the his criminal activities. However, she feels the area needs somebody like him to put things back in order. They start becoming close, but their relationship is fast tracked into a live in situation, when Angel has to get away from those who she once called her friends.
