Teenagers JoeE Collins, MaryAna Lindley, and Coree Calhoun have survived everything life has thrown their way, from long-buried family secrets to wayward parents. All three now face new obstacles as they contemplate the future and impending adulthood.
JoeE will have to learn that his prowess on the football field isn't the only thing that matters. He may be a sports star in Brandon, Mississippi, but his recent failure in the state playoffs shows him that fame is a double-edged sword.
Coree, on the other hand, doesn't miss football. She resigned as assistant coach and is trying to isolate herself from the sport. Although football has been her passion for years, it has been made clear to her that she's unwelcome on the field.
JoeE and Coree are so wrapped up in their own problems that they barely notice that MaryAna is spiraling out of control. She is putting all her energy into planning her mother's wedding, but the event is stressing her out. She's turning to old and dangerous coping mechanisms to make it through.
