Sylvia Johnson is beginning a new life with her fiancé but is unable to move forward emotionally because of a forced estrangement from her family. She sneaks into her mother's empty house hoping to say good-bye to the past but finds legal papers belonging to her parents. When they are exposed, the result is chaos for the entire family.
Sylvia's intimidating brother tries to stop her from looking further into the situation behind the papers while her sharp-witted mother feigns ignorance of them. During her search for answers Sylvia meets a family who invites her into theirs where she finds acceptance, timely advice, and a kindred soul.
