The late afternoon newspapers announced that three federal employees, one prominent journalist, and two editors of the left-wing magazine, Amerasia, had been arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit espionage. All six had ties to the American Communist Party, and one of them had been communicating with an agent of the Soviet Union. As a result, the Amerasia affair could have led to the first famous spy case associated with the developing Cold War between the United States and its former wartime ally, the USSR.
