"Ralph Bakshi's memorable screen collaboration with Frank Frazetta, Fire and Ice, finally gets a special DVD treatment thanks to one of the leaders in cult film releases, Blue Underground. First off, this 2-Disc Limited Edition is gorgeous, with a holographic slipcase cover creating a striking package that will leave fans drooling and unassuming consumers enticed. With an anamorphic 1.78:1 widescreen picture and top-of-the-line 6.1 DTS-ES and 5.1 Dolby Digital track sound options, you know that you're getting the best presentation possible for this release. Thankfully, the disc also includes enough extras for you to sink your teeth into, never mind a second disc that features the acclaimed Frazetta: Painting With Fire documentary by director Lance Laspina. Laspina also shows up on the Fire and Ice commentary with Bakshi, which is more like a sparring match than friendly sit-down audio track. It's not that the two men have disdain for each other, but there is something about Bakshi's New Yorker attitude that tends to clash with the other man's reserved qualities. The end result is an informative and awkwardly entertaining track filled with enough raging ego to fuel a small city, which fans of the infamous director won't be surprised by in the least. Fire and Ice extras include a vintage making-of and another smaller featurette that delves into the relationship of Frazetta and Bakshi. Some diary notes, a still gallery, and the original theatrical trailer make up the rest of the first disc, with another commentary included on the Painting With Fire disc. As usual, Blue Underground has gone out of its way to deliver a packed release that, even with its flaws (the making-of was mastered from the only existing video print), maintains a level of quality that is admired throughout the industry."
