It's happened. Their worst fears have come true. A tumbling meteorite named Cupid 23 comes barreling to earth, wiping out the tiny German town of Spangdahlem. Millions of tons of earth are thrown up into the atmosphere and the sky turns a dirty brown. Within hours the darkened skies have crossed the Atlantic. By the end of the day the entire earth will be affected. On a lonely highway in Texas, Marty Hankins catches a whiff of a long-forgotten smell. From eight miles away his best friend and fellow trucker, Lenny Geibel, calls over the radio. "Marty, I smell dirt in the air. Please, tell me you don't smell it too." Both men had lived through a previous meteorite's assault ten years before. Both remembered that the smell of earth in the air preceded the darkening of the skies. And the six year freeze which followed. This is the story of two groups of survivors. Survivors who've already been through hell, and who are now facing another round. They live in two different places, in two dramatically different shelters. They've been preparing for the latest disaster, and at the same time praying it wouldn't happen. It did. And few would survive.
