South africa, taking the Zambesi River as its northern boundary, contains at the present time five British colonies, two of which, viz. The Cape Colony and Natal, are self governing colonies, While the other three, Basutoland, the Transvaal, and the Orange River Colony, are Crown colonies, though of course the former differs entirely from the latter two in Character. It also contains the Bechuana land Protectorate, which stretches north to the British South Africa Company's territory and the Zambesi. In addition to this area there is the territory of the Royal British South Africa Company, now known as Southern Rhodesia, con sisting of Mashonaland and Matabeleland 1.
