It is strange that this group is named after C-melody saxophonist
Frankie Trumbauer
, for none of the swing-oriented songs they perform on the CD have anything to do with
Tram
. All but two numbers have vocals by pianist
Daryl Sherman
and/or
Barbara Lea
and, although pleasant, they are sometimes closer to cabaret than to jazz. Cornetist
Dick Sudhalter
and tenor-saxophonist
Loren Schoenberg
contribute some fine solos and the music (particularly such songs as
"More than You Know,"
"This Year's Kisses," "Manhattan" and "Getting Some Fun out of Life") is often enjoyable but not as special as one might have expected from this lineup. ~ Scott Yanow
