Fischer
has departed in many of these recordings from his earlier interpretations, putting on some speed in line with his contention, expressed in the booklet, that
Haydn
's late symphonies, in their time, were big spectacles that should have the impact of a rock concert. It is not that his readings are big and splashy -- the
Danish Chamber Orchestra
is a modestly sized group, and the general precision of
's approach, with a variety of specific bowstrokes, remains intact. However, the drumroll that gives the
Symphony No. 103 in E flat major
its name has punchy impact, and it is matched by the extensive use of the timpani in the minuet of the
Symphony No. 104 in D major
. At times, the
can't quite keep up with
's speed demands here, but there is an overall sense of excitement similar to that in the earlier recordings in the series. The medium-sized concert hall of the Royal Danish Academy of Music is ideal for this project, whose end will be greeted with sadness by many, even if some have found
