Or, in times long gone when the ambient magic was strong, some mages were not born with any natural gift, but could use magic through dedicated study. That hadn't happened in generations.
In the land of Albion, magic has faded. In years gone by, reckless and selfish mages stole and hoarded magic, leading to the Great Corruption. Now mages are a rarity in a society that relies heavily on magic to function.
When Eleri-herself magicless but ever fascinated by it-learns that even the little magic left is starting to disappear from the world, she makes it her mission to find out why. Driven by the urge to help, she sets out on a journey that will take her all the way to Gryphon's Keep, where the Elders regulate the use and study of magic with an iron fist.
