Hell Fer Sartin
is, as the author notes, a series of 10 short, similar monologues. They were originally published in various periodicals, and Hell Fer Sartain was also included in "A Cumberland Vendetta, and Other Stories." Hell Fer Sartin, or sometimes Hell for Certain, is a few miles north of Hyden along the Middle Fork of the Kentucky River. As the crow flies, which is not how you can get there, it is about four miles from Dogwood Valley Groceries, and almost due west of Hazard. The most common story for how it got its name involves a missionary who took a trip to the area long ago. When asked where he'd been he said something to the effect of, "I don't know, but it was Hell for certain!" Hell fer Sartain is alongside Kingdom-Come, and, with feuds and the excitement incident to the moonshining industry, the inhabitants seem to have pretty lively time of it. Mr Fox tells his stories with humor and leaves the reader with the that Hell fer Sartain is a good place to stay away from.
