Since Hong Kong's 1997 passage from British to mainland Chinese sovereignty went so uneventfully, "issues surrounding the city have virtually disappeared from the American consciousness" according to the editor. Ten contributed chapters explore issues and trends that continue to test the "two countries, one policy" slogan. The first chapter, which includes a chronology of significant recent events, overviews US policy toward Hong Kong, its 2000 election and other political trends, and relationship with the People's Republic of China (including Beijing's immigration policy from 1983-97).
