The story picks up the day after "In Between Time" (ISBN 978-1-4961-8626-3) ends. While attempting to reintegrate themselves into a subtly though significantly different timeline the Ranch team writes their report and performs a calibration that covers 2000 years. Joe and Janice have their second and third dates. A mission request from an allied nation is seized upon as an opportunity to break through the bureaucratic gridlock that has been limiting the capabilities of the Ranch for years. As they all stand on the threshold of attempting truly momentous deeds, tragedy strikes and Janice's two close friends are taken from her by a mysterious accident. Reeling from her loss and with the inquisition pointing the finger at her, Janice begins to question her sanity and whether what she has been experiencing is even real. As Joe prepares to travel further back in time than anyone has ever attempted before, he is assigned a super woman femme fatal from his own timeline as a trainer. When it appears that she has her own designs on Joe and a scheme to get Janice permanently out of the way, Janice has a crisis of faith as she agonizes why God would allow this to happen.
