This book is an inspiring and empowering story about the struggles and adversity Calvin experienced after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. It is a compelling memoir that chronicles his entire life up to age 34, but the main premise of this book focuses on the thirteen year period following his bipolar diagnosis, and all of the experiences he had as a result. After enduring a difficult childhood, Calvin became not only a great student but also an outspoken, intelligent, and talented young man with a bright future in front of him. All of that changed when he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1995. Calvin had just turned 20, was a soon to be father, and in the prime of his life, but saw all of his hopes and dreams go out the window. He would spend the next 13 years of his life struggling just to maintain his sanity and mental stability. Calvin recalls his manic episodes with incredible detail, expressing what he saw and heard during psychosis. He also describes his clinical depressions, and the many places his illness took him. He experienced incarceration in jails and mental institutions, homelessness, many trips to the psych ward, living in group homes, and substance abuse. He eventually overcame his illness and now leads a relatively normal and productive life, but getting there was not easy. Calvin decided to share his thought-provoking and impactful story with the world in hopes of encouraging and inspiring others who suffer from bipolar disorder as well as other mental disorders, and to educate those who may not know much about it. His story and testimony is very powerful and groundbreaking, and his experiences are profound. This is a very insightful and important story that he felt needed to be told, and he hopes to spread a message of strength, faith and resilience against all odds, and hopes to empower and positively affect everyone who reads this book.
