Oasis Lake, with a population of less than 500, is a town that one only encounters by mistake. After an all but forced reassignment to this boring and forgettable town due to his dabbling in adultery and alcoholism, Father Jonas Ritofzki welcomes the uneventful atmosphere of his new residence. That is until Jonas overhears the gossiping old church ladies report the violent and untimely death of Myrtle Walden, a pillar of the community, and the disappearance of her husband Mark. Jonas, having visited the couple a week prior over their lack of attendance at Sunday's Service, begins to suffer through the questions of "what did he miss?", "what could he have done differently?", and "who killed Myrtle?". These questions are short-lived once Jonas witnesses a monstrous figure roaming the church. Once Jonas realizes that the town's only sheriff, his good friend Rufus, is of no help, he takes matters into his own hands to defend the people of Oasis Lake, a once unremarkable town, from creatures he thought only existed in scripture.
