The narrator of this story was born just outside Chernobyl the year the nuclear reactor exploded. She grew up in a country wracked by misery and confusion. In a land of “radioactive children,” monstrous crops from the exclusion zone, red skies, and alcoholic, sick and shellshocked men, women take refuge in the ordinary. Among them are a mother whose birth was never registered to evade Stalin’s persecution; a grandmother kidnapped by the Nazis who returns home at war’s end only to be accused of treason, forced to eke out a living gathering peat; a young woman infatuated with Mayakovsky; and another who uses her long braids to fish.
