In this book, I do not wish to categorise men, but rather to provide an overview of different 'images of men'. Encountering men means encountering a diversity of male personalities - there is not just 'the man', but countless masculinities. In a (male) world dominated by hierarchical structures and expertise, the relationships offered by the person-centred approach give men the opportunity to experience encounters in a new way. Encounter here means 'a direct personal encounter, on a person-to-person level, a sincere relationship between two imperfect human beings' (C. Rogers 1980). The relationship as a togetherness and facing each other, exchange and confrontation are the essence of therapy. A dialogue determined by person-centred attitudes gives men the opportunity, within the framework of a therapeutic relationship, to encounter their 'images of masculinity' and myths and to emancipate themselves from them, i.e. to free themselves. Thomas Köffler
