Amy's on the run and scavenging in waste bins for her next meal. It's cold, it's raining, she has no money, nowhere to live, and her aunt wants her dead.
If she turns herself in to the police, they will almost certainly imprison her. But even in prison she is still not safe from the long reach of her aunt. Now she's done what she's done, things are looking hopeless. Both her parents are dead and she has no friends to look to for help... until she meets Clem and Eli. But what can a couple of quirky teenage girls do?
If you have to ask that question, you don't know Clemence Quirk and Elinore Kinrade, neither of whom are inclined to let Amy go without feeding her up and getting her some clean clothes. Amy finds reprieve at Clem's home, but it doesn't last for long as her aunt scours the island for her, using all her many contacts.
Finally, Amy's aunt corners her in a network of partially flooded underground caverns. As the water level rises, there's only one way out, and Amy takes it, but her hoped-for exit is too small for her to get through. Death seems certain for both her and her aunt when the roof of the passage collapses allowing tons of contaminated water to crash down onto them.
