Mental illness is a dark mystery that needs demystifying, and the author, by relating her experience of schizophrenic breakdown hopes to lead to a breakthrough in attitudes, care and treatment of the mentally unwell. Sufferers of schizophrenia are not all unpredictable and dangerous and given appropriate care, can live meaningful and stable lives in the community. It is a myth that schizophrenia relates to a Jekyll and Hyde personality. The author has something to offer the reading public on the issue of mental illness because of her personal experience of schizophrenia. The book gives an insight into the reality of the illness and by speaking out, she hopes her writing will be a source of inspiration for other mental health sufferers. Personal stories which are about individual experience go one step further than general medical books on the subject, as they give not only information and knowledge but a chance to gain a view from within. Knowledge and acknowledgement of illness has been the process by which the author has coped with this devastating illness. Mental illness does not discriminate. It strikes across the divides of race, age, class and sexuality and society should not discriminate against those who live with mental illness.
