This book presents a practical approach to encoding problems in progressive image transmission. General principles that a solution must obey are first stated, then a novel method for information prioritization, bit rate allocation, and order performance evaluation is described. The method presented can be used in any situation in which the image data can withstand high levels of compression and still permit reconstruction qualities that are adequate for a variety of imaging applications.
