For the most part, this book contains the unusual, the exotic and the different sandwiches that will put delicious, new, and exciting tastes at your fingertips. But don't forget the all time American favorites, the hamburger, the ballpark hot dog, the world famous peanut butter and jelly and, of course, the childrens everyday much beloved grilled cheese. Regardless which sandwich you choose, remember, the idea is to enjoy while satisfying your hunger and delighting your taste buds. For this reason, we suggest that you take extra care in the presentation and the garnish for all you serve. After all who wants to eat a ballpark hot dog with the bun in one hand and the dog in the other?
This book is dedicated to John Montague, fourth Lord of Sandwich, who was born on November 3, 1718. His Lordship was England's First Lord of the Admiralty, Secretary of State for the Northern Department, Post Master General, and perhaps most important, at least to us today, he is the man after whom Captain Cook named the Sandwich Islands in 1778. In addition to all of the above, he was a rake and a gambler who is said to have invented the sandwich as a time saving nourishment to be enjoyed while properly engaged in a twenty-four hour long gambling session in 1762. He died in London England, on April 30, 1792, and National Sandwich Day, named in his honor, is celebrated on his birthday, November 3. Let's all help to remember him and eat and enjoy a really special sandwich on his birthday. The author of this book will be joining you on his Lordship's special day of remembrance and then we'll all be happy. To find the ideal sandwich with which to celebrate, read on and bon appétit.
Ralph Johnston, a writer, and Martha, his wife, the photographer in the family, work as a team on all projects including almost 40 years of marriage, 3 children and 3 grandchildren. Over the years, they have successfully produced newspaper columns, magazine articles, stories and books. Recent books include, Ohio, the Pleasures and Treasures of Warren County and Specialties of the House, Cincinnati, Dining Guide with Recipes. The latest book in their Specialties of the House series is A Collection of Seafood Recipes Featuring New Orleans House Restaurants. Several other books are forthcoming and will soon be available at your local bookstore.
