In the aftermath of World War II, David, a decorated soldier, returns to the serene wilderness of Michipicoten, Ontario, in northern Canada, hoping to rebuild his life with his Ojibwe wife, Miin, and their young son, Makwa. Like many returning veterans, he finds work in the local mines, hoping to provide for his family.
