Our parents were born into farming families in late nineteenth century rural north-central Florida. When they married, they lived with his aging parents on the farm in Woodville near Tallahassee. Mama's first two children were boys, Park Wilson and Joseph Wiley. She lost her next three children in infancy. The family was too poor to afford engraved headstones. Rounded sandstones about the size of pumpkins without carving or inscriptions were placed above each grave. In the thirties, the family moved to Havana where Daddy became Chief of Police. He and a nightwatchman made up the police force. They were given firearms but not provided with uniforms or an automobile. Sister Mary Zell, brother Guinn and I were born in Havana. Every year, we attended August Meeting, the annual homecoming at the Primitive Baptist Church in Woodville. As a child, I remember going to the cemetery with Mama to visit the graves. Over the years, the stones disappeared and the graves had no identity. Nearly one hundred years after our sister and brothers were laid to rest, the family has placed headstones for Little Beverly, Hurchel and Leona. I never knew them but I have given these three siblings adult lives in my writing.
