Something Else
by
the Move
was recorded "live" on February 27, 1968 at a show at London's Marquee Club. It captures
in full cry going through a brace of their favorite covers. Kicking off with a nice turn on
the Byrds
'
"So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star,"
the quintet moves on to
Love
's
"Stephanie Knows Who,"
a psychedelic number with loads of wah-wah guitar from
Roy Wood
. After two old rockabilly classics,
Eddie Cochran
's title track and
Jerry Lee Lewis
"It'll Be Me,"
the band launches into
Spooky Tooth
"Sunshine Help Me."
An unedited version of this performance with a longer guitar solo closes this collection. The other bonus tracks include cutting-edge R&B like
"Piece of My Heart"
and
Jackie Wilson
"Higher and Higher,"
both heard here for the first time since their recording, along with
Denny Laine
"Too Much in Love."
The band tracks are pub rock bash 'n' crash all the way, while the vocals (most of them re-recorded in 1968 when the live versions were deemed unusable due to tape distortion) feature spot-on harmonies and impassioned singing by
Carl Wayne
at his best. A nice souvenir of how bands truly sounded before PA systems, monitors, and assorted electronic voodoo boxes could make you sound "just like the record." [
was released as a 17-track CD in 2016.] ~ Cub Koda
