The following note appears in the Preface of the Complete Geography: The subject-matter which needs most careful study is in large type. The explanatory and descriptive matter in small type does not call for close study, but may be used for supplementary reading.
These small-type notes fill out the thoughts expressed in the large type, and often explain or describe features or phenomena of general interest, yet not essential to a brief course in geography.
