"Heroic Ambition: Constructing a Panoramic Genealogy of Chinese Heroes
The year 1911, as the Qing Dynasty teetered on the brink of collapse, revealed an empire shrouded in magnificence yet riddled with fatal maladies and decay beneath its façade. Beneath a surface of apparent calm surged a powerful, irreversible tide: revolution!
Reformers like Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao loudly proclaimed, "Complete transformation brings strength; partial change leads only to ruin!", fervently advocating for change. The powerless Emperor Guangxu and his scholarly reformist ministers struggled bare-handed against the aging but cunning Empress Dowager Cixi and her allies. With the crisp crack of gunfire in the 1911 Revolution, the dragon flag of the Qing Dynasty, which had flown for over 260 years, fell... Countless tenacious revolutionaries-soldiers and intellectuals alike-sacrificed their lives, shedding blood and offering their bodies and souls to their cause and their country.
Tang Caichang, leader of the "Self-Support Army", was among the first to fall. Figures like Shi Jianru, Wu Yue, and Xu Xilin poured out their crimson blood in sacrifice. Zhao Erfeng, a lifelong military man and national hero, transformed into the "Butcher of Chengdu". Yuan Shikai, nurturing threats to serve his own ends, "usurped" the fruits of victory... The 1911 Revolution was both a grand epic of individual heroism and a powerful symphony of nationalism.
Those bloody years of revolution ended prematurely. Nearly a century has passed like fleeting smoke, yet the bitterness longed for by the fervent revolutionaries in the wake of the 1911 gunfire continues to linger in our hearts.
