Over 140 years ago, the United States Cavalry battled elements of the Sioux and Cheyenne Nations. They fought over the land, the right to live in peace and a lifestyle handed down through generations. The United States under President Grant had other ideas for the land and its people. Three military units with over twenty seven hundred soldiers, civilians and four hundred Crow and Shoshone Scouts marched against an Indian encampment on the Little Big Horn River. On June 17th, 1876, General Crook commanded fifteen troops of the 2nd and 3rd cavalry, seven troops of the 4th and 9th infantry with two hundred and fifty Scouts into the headwaters of Rosebud Creek. They were met by the world's finest light cavalry, two thousand Sioux and Cheyenne Warriors. The battle lasted over six hours. Lives were lost. Yet out of this battle many heroic deeds came about. It is still known today as, "The fight where the sister who saved her brother".
