God1 - topics which are just touched on in xl. - xlviii. (x1. 9, xli. Xliv. 26 ff., xlv. But are here the central and all-absorbing interest. We observe further that the appeal is now addressed to individual Israelites rather than to the nation as a whole, as if the great hindrance to the emancipation of Israel was no longer political, but lay in the selfishness and timidity of the mass of the people (1: Only a few writers2 have thought that these differences amount to a proof of dual authorship. How far they are to be explained by a change of situation is a question which must be deferred till we have examined the possibilities that lie in the historical background of the prophecies (p. Xxxix f The discourses of which this section is composed are even less closely articulated than those of xl. - xlviii. They are mostly Of three kinds, which alternate with each other, without any discoverable principle of arrangement.
