Excerpt from The Bride of Rougemont, the Cross and the Medal: And Ode on the Death of Major Welsford
The description of the Battle of Poitiers in the Second Canto is drawn from Froissart, compared with Holinshed, Hume, and Rapin.
I fear antiquaries will search in vain for Rougemont in Camden's Britannia.
I have adopted the decasyllabic metre, or English Heroic, because it seems to me to be capable, in skilful hands, of any degree of pathos, descriptive power, or sublimity.
