It's a brutally cold day in Buffalo, New York, one of those days when folks are hunkered down inside their homes, but for 71-year-old John Ross, a warm house, safe from the screeching winds which assault the city from the north, there is no warmth. For those who even notice him, a homeless man, wearing tattered clothes, thin and gaunt, with a thick gray beard covering most of his face, he is referred to as the Buffalo Kid, just another vagrant, who lives under a bridge in a cardboard box. People assume the worst of course, but no one, except a local police officer knows the truth about who the Kid really is and why he has walked the streets, destitute and penniless for 31 years. Plying the barren and bitterly cold streets one day, he meets a stranger who hands him a fifty-dollar bill and walks off. The encounter leaves the Kid stunned.
