The short-lived crime series PAY-OFF (5 issues, 1948-1949) at first glance looks like a Lev Gleason crime classic series. There is no doubt that it took more than just a little inspiration from the long-running CRIME DOES NOT PAY and other Gleason titles, but this came from D.S. Publishing, a song-sheet publisher who decided to jump into the comics world. DS was known for good quality books drawn by top professionals of the day (McWilliams, Camy, Larsen, Jenney, etc.). DS Publishing was certainly trying to make a splash in crime comics in 1948, with eight different crimes titles out during that year – but alas, it did not last and by 1950 DS had shuttered their comic offices. Gwandanaland Comics brings this series together in print for the first time in over 70 years, so you can experience a little bit of late-40s crime comic excitement!
