On November 10, 1975, along the deep waters of Lake Superior, a low pressure system is hooking up from the panhandle of Oklahoma menacingly. Displacing a late autumn warm front the low slams into the first of the Arctic systems that dive forcefully along the lakes, bringing Lake Superior, with all her strength and fury, into a churning tempest no man dares to challenge.
Within this backdrop of a freshwater hurricane Michael must know the truths about his Mother's older Brother: His Uncle Ned. Michael must ascertain, as the storm builds; must face the reality that Uncle Ned may be the body discussed this morning by the voice in Grandpa's radio. His Uncle Ned quite probably the corpse left behind, tattered and slain by the grooved wheels of a southbound freight train. At fifteen he wants to protect his Mother, if he can, though the gales bring to his surface his own storms...those storms that batter and bruise the soul of a teenager.
And this storm, the one in his head, may be even more powerful that the one raging outside...the one strong enough to take down the ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald.
