Excerpt from The Hallowell BookThe town also responded promptly to the extent of its means to the calls made upon it during the Revolutionary War. Sev eral military companies were formed and prepared for active ser vice by drill and exercise. A company of minute men was also organized in case of sudden alarm. During the war provisions on the Kennebec were often scarce and very high, and many families suffered with hunger. In 17 84, the population of Hallo well consisted of 682 white persons and 10 negroes.
