A young girl who moves to a new town with her mother. The transition is difficult as she is bullied at school. Her mother notices that her daughter is having problems and talks with her to find out what is going on. Once she understands the problem, she tells her daughter about her childhood, where she learned about the Kalo plant from her uncle who was a farmer. He taught her that the Hawaiians refer to the plant's shoots as children, the leaves as protecting ancestors, and the main root as the parent. The shoots are referred to as 'oha. The grouping of shoots with the parent is called 'Ohana. 'Ohana is the Hawaiian word for family. The lesson from the Kalo plant is that we are each from different places and we are different, but we are all family.
