Seventy-one years ago, in 1953, the Somerset Federation of Women's Institutes announced a Coronation Competition, for its members to write a history of their parish. Trull & Staplehay WI decided to enter, as did 115 others, and won first prize. It was published as a paperback book, at a price of 7s 6d, and quickly needed a second printing. These too were snapped up, and ever since then the book has been out of print.
Several years ago, the Trull Parish Archive Group suggested that it was time for a new edition, which the WI agreed to enthusiastically. Not only had much changed in the intervening years, but more was known about Trull Parish, particularly its prehistory and the impact of both the Civil War and the Monmouth Rebellion. So this is the new story of Trull, which we hope will be of interest and value, until a new generation in its turn decides to update it again.
